12th Adam Dealey Golf Day 2007

Image - Header Line

To be held at Verulam Golf Club, St. Albans, Hertfordshire
Friday 12th October 2007

We are pleased to confirm details of this years golf event and bring you up to date with where we are with the funds raised.

First of all, the response to my previous mail was overwhelming and everyone we have spoken to is up for the change of venues although the costs will rise. Also a change of date has meant that it does not clash with other events as in previous years and it is clear that the golf side of the event will be over subscribed and have decided that the fairest way is to allocate places on a first come first served basis.

The day will commence in the morning at Verulam Golf Club 'Home of the Ryder Cup'. On arrival coffee and bacon rolls will be provided (should you require a full breakfast this will be at extra cost and prior notice required) followed by the golf. Arrangements have yet to be finalised but it is likely that the tee off will be staggered from two holes.

The website for Verulam Golf Club is www.verulamgolf.co.uk

This will be followed by the evening event which will take place at the nearby '4 Star' Sopwell House Hotel (part of the course runs through the hotel grounds). The hotel has in the past been home to many club and national football sides playing in London and the England Team have been staying there this week. As I said in my previous email whilst Adam was undergoing treatment Alec Ferguson kindly arranged for him to meet the Manchester Utd players during their stay Sopwell.

We would request that evening guests are ready to be seated at 6.30 pm as always we have a lot to get through during the course of the evening. The golf presentations will be followed by a three course meal, raffle, charity auction and of course dancing to the resident disco which will go on until 12.30 am.

The facilities at the Hotel are second to none and anyone choosing to stay overnight will have full use of the health club and Spa.

The website for Sopwell House Hotel is www.sopwellhouse.co.uk

Now the costs which for obvious reasons have had to rise this year but we feel that everyone will get full value for money and have a day to remember...

Golf Teams

  • Teams of 4: cost per head £95 includes coffee and rolls on arrival , round of golf followed by evening dinner/dance.
  • Evening only: £45 per head (3 course meal dinner/dance)
  • For those of you that want to treat yourselves and stay at Sopwell overnight we have negotiated a bed and breakfast room rate of £135 which will include full use of the facilities, so guys you can go off and play the golf whilst the ladies can relax in the Health Club and Spa or even take in the sites of St Albans
As I have said previously the success of this event relies heavily on sponsorship and people coming forward with prizes for the auction and raffle and we hope that this year will be no exception in the quality of things up for grabs. So far several people have come forward to sponsor holes and we should be delighted to hear from others.

Attached are the registration forms together with details of sponsorship opportunities, if you can't make the golf and want to attend in the evening that's fine.

Funds Raising

Right you ask where's all the money raised is going...

When we originally set up the fund in Adam's memory it was and still is primarily to fund research into Ewings Sarcoma and initially these projects were handled through The United Kingdom Children's Cancer Study Group and were very much on our own in this.

Some 3 years ago I was contacted via Adam's website by Patricia Smith a lady from Southern Ireland who had lost a daughter to Ewings and she started to raise monies and we jointly funded projects some of which were based at Leeds. At the same a group of parents who had lost children to Osteo sarcoma a cancer not dissimilar to Ewings started raising monies for research in that area.

We were all brought together by Dr Ian Lewis a leading specialist in treating Ewing and Osteo Sarcoma in children who knew what work was going on in Adam's memory and last year. The Bone Cancer Research Trust was set up and both Patricia and myself are trustees of this charity

The majority of funds now raised collectively go to the charity which has taken off at an alarming rate, the trustees meet every two months and we have already funded an international conference on Ewings Sarcoma which was attended by some 100 delegates, all specialists in the field from all over Europe and the US. This was the first of it's kind ever held and was an outstanding success.

A second grant has been awarded to the Institute of Health at Great Ormond Street funding a Ewings project over the next 3 years.

The BCRT will be holding it's first annual conference in Leicester at the beginning of July and this will be attended by patients and parents as well as medical professionals. At the same time the trustees will be looking at 4 further grant applications. On the 24th of this month we one of the largest contingents, some 60 runners taking part in the Jane Tomlinson Run For Life in Leeds including a fellow trustee Nick Bones who lost a limb to Osteo Sarcoma

So an awful lot going on and really it was the monies raised by yourselves in Adam's memory that started things off and gave others something to aim for.

As I have said on many occasions the support we have had over the years has been amazing and on occasions when the going has got tough you have given us the strength to go on and your kindness is much appreciated, to think that together we have raised almost £250k.

Finally if you go to BCRT's website you will see details re all of the above including the projects originally funded in Adam's name alone

Hope to see you on 12th October and many many thanks once again, if you need any further information please contact us...
